Small steps are important.

Trying to get into the habit of hitting this more often for short posts. And speaking of small steps and short posts, did you know that Americans were, on average, the tallest people in the world until the 1970's? Since then, however, our bad diets and shitty health care system have resulted in our average height staying the same, while Europeans have been steadily increasing. The result? The average American is now 2cm shorter than the shortest average European and 6cm shorter than the tallest (the Dutch).

And speaking of the Dutch, here it is - your Moment of Zen:

Fantastic?

A quick hit: I've always been a little leery of the Fantastic Four. They will always remind me of that era of comics known in the business as the "Golden Age" (i.e. the sixties). I will always think of them as having Jack Kirby's incredibly weird but cool drawings, paired with Stan Lee's incredibly weird but lame scripts. There was a period in the early 90's when Walt Simonson worked on the title and I absolutely loved it. I think he's one of the most underrated comics creators. He did a lot of amazing time-travel stuff with the team. But in short, like any comic book characters, they can be amazing in the right hands, and duds in the wrong ones. Tim Story, Don Payne and Mark Frost are the wrong hands. I'm sorry, but the first FF movie sucked and even the trailer for the second one looks awful. Then there's this. Apparently Marvel Comics' marketing department decided to promote the movie by taking actual quarters and changing the back to a picture of the Silver Surfer. Which qualifies as defacement of currency, and is, of course, a federal crime. Sigh. I will not be seeing this movie.

So. Moving forward. The past is the past. What's up?

- Dad's in town for Memorial Day. He saw the early show last night at SC and we went to the zoo today and then to a movie ("Waitress"). Good times!

- The zoo was okay -- most of the animals were asleep. I think we were there too early in the day. Niki said she was there recently and it made her sad because the animals seemed unhappy, but I think that catching them at nap time or food time makes a huge difference.

- The movie was quite good. A fairly predictable script, but well directed, well acted and just plain sweet. Gotta love Nathan Fillion! Other recent movies I've seen: "28 Weeks Later": liked the first 30-45 minutes, but then they stopped following their own rules. Still, gotta love Rose Byrne! "Spiderman 3": awful. I was embarrassed to have been excited to see it. Damn you, Sam Raimi! "Hot Fuzz": brilliant. Edgar Wright could give Baz Luhrmann lessons on how to create a unique visual style and stick with it through the entire film. "Grindhouse": liked the Robert Rodriguez half, LOVED the Tarantino half.

- The show's going well. We've turned over all of the material at this point, and I think we could make a good show if we had to open tomorrow. Luckily, we've got four more weeks, so I really think we could end up with a great show! Now, if I can just get my set design to turn out like I envision it..... Having fun spending other people's money, though! Got us a DVD Recorder for taping the shows, a new guitar for the MD to play, new speakers, fish masks, Jesus wig, moustache tape, collar stays -- the list goes on and on. I hope the producers don't read this!

- Kelly and Kingston were both out of town this week. Left me rocking out the bachelor pad. Had to spend Sunday cleaning up the mess. : )

- Dad was in the hospital recently for diabetes issues, but seems fully recovered. Not moving as fast as he used to, but who among us is?

- Had an iTunes gift card left over from my birthday, and bought the new "Feist" album -- highly recommended!

- Speaking of my birthday, my brother got me a SCOTTEVEST and I adore it. I think I wore it every day for the first month I had it!

- My friend Mike Brownlee had a show he wrote given a full production. "The Past's Present." I liked the production, and I liked what it had to say, but somehow it left me a little flat with the way it said it, if that makes sense. I know he reads this, and we haven't had a chance to talk about it, so I wanted to say here that it was a good show. Solid and worthy, and he should be proud.

- Finally getting around to reading "Snow Crash." Finished "The Diamond Age" and loved it to death, so I needed to keep going on my Stephenson kick. Although, in between I sped through "Ysabel" by Guy Gavriel Kay. It was a pleasant surprise when halfway though, suddenly two characters from "The Fionavar Tapestry" showed up!

That's all I've got for the moment. Will try to do this on a more regular basis. Promise. And now, since it was the 30th anniversary of "Star Wars" last week, here it is - your Moment of Zen:
